Highwood Lutheran Liturgy Scholarship

This scholarship is for students of theology or church music who are looking for a practical and hands-on learning experience with Lutheran liturgy, in leading the service and/or music leadership.

It is designed as a practicum where successful applicants will participate in the planning and leading of the weekly services under the mentorship of our pastor and music director. The length of this opportunity will be agreed upon by the mentors and the successful applicants. It can be arranged for a full year, a semester, or a summer.

The successful applicant will receive $100 per week for the duration of the scholarship, plus the experience gained through mentorship and leading of the weekly worship services.

Expectations

Theology and liturgical leader
  • one hour/week with mentors, three hours for the services and personal time for preparation or study
  • move from observation to leading
  • singing instructions as need
Musicians
  • one hour/week with mentors, three hours for the services and personal time for preparation or study
  • musicians will start with hymn playing and progress to the liturgical accompaniment
  • participate in the planning of the weekly services.

Criteria and Eligibility

  • Musical training an asset but not required for theology candidates
  • Theology candidates - one year of Christian theology or religious studies
  • A desire to understand how the liturgy directs a worship service
  • Willingness to learn how to sing the liturgy
  • Music candidates - at least a Grade 8 level RCM piano or organ proficiency or equivalent
  • Church music experience as asset but is not required
  • A desire to engage in the theology of church music (liturgy and hymnody)
